The King James Version prints JEHOVAH in four verses: Exodus 6:3, Psalm 83:18, Isaiah 12:2 and Isaiah 26:4. It also keeps the name inside three place names: Jehovah-jireh (Genesis 22:14), Jehovah-nissi (Exodus 17:15) and Jehovah-shalom (Judges 6:24).
Everywhere else, the King James translators wrote LORD or GOD in small capitals where the Hebrew text has the name.
The four verses
And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.
Exodus 6:3, King James Version
That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
Psalm 83:18, King James Version
Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
Isaiah 12:2, King James Version
Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:
Isaiah 26:4, King James Version
How to tell where the name was
The King James Version uses three spellings, and they mean different things.
- Lord in small capitals stands for the name YHWH.
- Lord in ordinary letters translates Adonai, a title meaning lord or master.
- Lord God, with God in small capitals, is where the Hebrew has Adonai followed by the name.
So any time you see Lord or God in small capitals, the Hebrew text has God's personal name in that spot.
Why the translators did it
By the time of the King James Version, the custom of reading "Lord" in place of the name was centuries old. Greek translations wrote Kyrios and Latin ones wrote Dominus, and the English tradition followed. The translators kept JEHOVAH where the name itself was the point of the verse, as in Exodus 6:3 and Psalm 83:18.
The same verses in this edition
The Divine Name King James Bible carries the translators' own practice through the rest of the text. Where they wrote Lord, it reads Jehovah. Isaiah 12:2, for example, reads "for Jah Jehovah is my strength and my song," because the Hebrew there has both the short form Jah and the full name. You can read Isaiah 12 or any other chapter online.
