How many times is God's name in the Bible?

God's name, written YHWH, appears roughly 6,800 to 7,000 times in the Hebrew Scriptures, depending on the Hebrew text and how it's counted. That makes it the most frequent name in the Bible by far.

The Divine Name King James Bible restores it 7,023 times in the Old Testament: Jehovah 6,973 times and Jah 50 times. The King James Version prints it in four verses.

Where the name appears most

These are the books with the most restorations in this edition.

Counted from the online text of the Second Edition. Every Old Testament place is listed in the book's concordance.

Why the counts differ

Counts vary with the Hebrew edition used, with whether the short form Jah is counted separately, and with whether places are included where ancient scribes are thought to have replaced the name with Adonai. That's why you'll see figures anywhere from about 6,800 to just under 7,000 for the full name.

Compared with the King James Version

The King James Version prints JEHOVAH in Exodus 6:3, Psalm 83:18, Isaiah 12:2 and Isaiah 26:4, and JAH once, in Psalm 68:4. In nearly every other place it writes LORD or GOD in small capitals. Jehovah in the King James Bible explains how to spot them.

The New Testament

In 128 places where the New Testament quotes or refers to a verse that has the name, this edition shows Jehovah in parentheses with the Old Testament reference, and the King James wording stays as it is.

The Second Edition is a paperback, 888 pages, with the full concordance. The lowest price is direct from the printer.
